Authenticity

Founded by two friends who met while visiting Nosara on a surfing trip, Sendero Hotel feels like a natural extension of the community and its relaxed surf and wellness cultures. The newer property opened in 2023, but it's fully enveloped by jungle-like greenery—there's even a mature tree growing through the middle of the dining area. The traditional hacienda-style structures feature locally sourced materials like repurposed brick and renewable Costa Rican teak, and common areas and rooms are dotted with colorful works by local artists like Gerardo Ramirez, Nadia Mendoza, and Pia Chavarría.

Location

You'll be located less than a 5-minute walk from the white sands of Playa Guiones, considered one of the country's best surf beaches. As part of the protected Ostional Turtle Refuge, the 5-mile (8 km) stretch of sand remains serene and unspoiled, with no buildings within 650 feet (200 m) of the shoreline. The beach is a gathering spot for the community at sunset, and village amenities like restaurants and shops are within a short stroll (there's also a fleet of cruiser bikes for exploring the area on two wheels). You can reach the larger Nosara in about 10 minutes by car, and Liberia Airport is 2.5 hours north.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 25 rooms range from petite, poolside Queens to spacious Suites with separate living areas. Jungle rooms overlook the neighboring nature reserve, and there's a ground-floor King for guests with limited mobility. All of the units feel airy and minimalist, decorated with natural tones, textures, and materials. Floor-to-ceiling steel and glass windows showcase the jungle greenery outside, and glowing pendant lamps, woven throw rugs, and oversized linen cushions create a feeling of lived-in calm. All rooms include outdoor patios and chicly appointed bathrooms with rain-style showers. For more space, book one of the new villas, with multiple bedrooms, kitchenettes and private pools.

Amenities

The central freeform saltwater pool is a highlight, surrounded by wooden decking that provides plenty of secluded spots to lounge. A light-filled studio offers daily yoga, fitness, and breathwork classes, and the charming on-site surf shop rents boards and can set you up with expert lessons. When you're ready to eat, Sendero Kitchen is a popular spot with locals and guests alike, serving creative and healthy twists on Costa Rican flavors, and there's a coffee truck for your morning oat milk latte or matcha. You'll also find street food-style bites and craft cocktails at the open-air Apres surf bar.

Family-Friendliness

Sendero welcomes children, though it advertises itself as an adult-oriented property and is most popular with couples and solo travelers. Families will be most comfortable in the seven newly added villas, which offer multiple bedrooms, kitchenettes, and private pools.

Wildlife

Nosara's plentiful wildlife frequents the property, and you're likely to spot howler monkeys and coatis among the jungle foliage and iguanas basking in the sun on the terraces. It's also a paradise for bird lovers; keep an eye out for the turquoise motmots and iridescent hummingbirds that flit around the rooms and villas. Down at the beach, you'll have the rare opportunity to see Olive Ridley turtles, which come to nest in the protected Ostional Wildlife Refuge.

Sustainability

Sendero strives to limit its environmental impact, and sustainability efforts throughout the property include solar panels, rainwater collecting and purifying systems, and extensive plantings of native species in the grounds and gardens. Bathroom amenities are organic and locally made, and food for the restaurant is sourced whenever possible from small, local growers and producers. Staff are hired mainly from the surrounding communities, and the on-site yoga studio, surf school, and art gallery are all locally run.
