Stracta Apartments Orustustaðir, Kirkjubæjarklaustur

3.5 (13 reviews) · Mid-range
Remote eco-friendly apartment hotel with self-catering units and scenic surroundings near historic Battle Hill

Overview

Stracta Apartments is a remote property, part of a small chain of Icelandic hotels, located about an hour east of Vík in the picturesque Orustustaðir area of southeast Iceland. Down a gravel road off the Ring Road, these apartments provide a countryside retreat within reach of key natural sites like Orustuhóll (Battle Hill). The brand-new units are thoughtfully designed with sustainability in mind, featuring fully equipped kitchenettes—though no ovens—in two-bedroom apartment or suite options.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Support sustainable tourism efforts at this Stracta property that uses repurposed materials and energy-efficient tech.
  • Though you'll be staying in a very remote location in Orustustaðir, you'll be close, by Iceland standards, to natural attractions like Orustuhóll and the Fossálar waterfall.
  • Spacious two-bedroom apartments are ideal for families or groups, complete with a fully equipped kitchenette.
  • The apartments are set on a 7,400-acre plot with former mining areas transformed into ponds and outdoor recreational spaces.
  • Each unit is brand new with modern furnishings done up in a Nordic aesthetic.
  • Free parking is available.
Cons
  • The hotel is remote, a 15-minute drive down a gravel road, making it necessary to bake into your plans where to eat and grocery shop and to rent a 4WD vehicle in the winter.
  • Past kimkim travelers have noted the single-story property isn't angled in a way that takes advantage of the views.

Authenticity

Like many Icelandic properties outside of urban centers, Stracta Apartments' authenticity relies on its location in nature, in this case, Orustustaðir, an area with a folkloric past of battling hidden people (elves). Stracta sits on 7,400 acres (3,000 ha) of land, 10% of which is currently under forestation and stretches from the Ring Road (Route 1) down through the Brunahraun (Burn lava) and Brunasand (Burn sand) areas and to the sea. The apartments are crafted from repurposed house units from Hungary's ATCO company, previously used on Icelandic construction sites. The use of locally sourced concrete materials has transformed former mining areas on the property into scenic ponds and recreational spaces.

Location

Located on a sprawling 7,400-acre (3,000 ha) plot in Orustustaðir, Stracta Apartments is a quiet off-the-beaten-path retreat. The property is about a 15-minute drive on a gravel road from the Ring Road and another 45 minutes to Vík. The nearest town is Kirkjubæjarklaustur, with a pharmacy and sports center and at least one restaurant, 25 minutes away. Despite its remote location, the apartments are near notable sites like Orustuhóll (Battle Hill), a 15-20-minute drive away, and nearish attractions like the rock formations of Dverghamrar, Foss á Síðu, and the Fossálar waterfall, all about 20-30 minutes drive. Another area of note is the Skaftafell nature reserve, about an hour's drive east.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The apartments at Stracta are typical of many Icelandic properties, modern and done up in a Nordic aesthetic, with options for two-bedroom or studio units. Each brand-new apartment features a spacious living room, bathroom, and fully equipped kitchenette (though without ovens and little cooking space), making them ideal for families, couples, or friends. You'll also find a proper living area with a couch, chairs, and coffee table, in addition to a small dining area.

Amenities

There isn't much in the way of amenities besides free parking, as the apartments are meant to be self-catering, with fully equipped kitchenettes. Guests can also check out the property's (manmade) ponds.

Family-Friendliness

The two-bedroom apartments are meant for families (or larger groups) and can sleep up to six individuals. They have two bedrooms and a pullout couch. Cribs are available upon request. The remote location, however, and lack of on-site staff will require some planning for those with young children.

Quick simple ok rooms, set in a motel arrangement.it is in the middle of no where, but not set to enjoy the views.
Not luxury at all
Breakfast was a nice concept.
Sorry we stayed there 2 nights. The long drive made it tiring at the end of the day.
Should definitely be another choice of hotel

Very nice clean, and quiet place. Pretty far off the main road. Could use an upgrade to some of the furniture. Didn’t trust the bench to even hold our suitcase. Had all the amenities to cook and fix our own meals. Read more

Brand new "apartments" next to a nature reserve. The buildings were almost finished (missing little things like one lamp had a shade, the other one didn't, the towel heater in the bathroom had not been installed yet - plumbing was installed, but not the heater, etc) and there was heavy construction equipment all over the place. Once they are finished building this could be a very nice location if you are looking for an out of the way place to stay. Also said they would provide breakfast... Read more

Very out of the way (15 min drive each way down a gravel road). This may be a pro for some people, but we didn't need to be that isolated. Also, there is no included breakfast, but there is a lovely kitchenette. The view is nice too! Read more
