Vatnahalsen Hotell, Flåm
Historic railway hotel offering a cozy atmosphere, nature views, local cuisine, and a relaxing sauna
Overview
Vatnahalsen Hotell, a former sanatorium built in 1896, is a hotel with a rich history. The hotel became popular shortly after the Bergen Railway opened in 1909, attracting Norwegian, British, German, and Dutch skiers who fondly referred to it as the Nordic St. Moritz. Even today, the hotel can only be reached by train, preserving its sense of historical charm and isolation. You'll also stay close to Rallar Road, widely recognized as Norway's finest bike road.
The hotel offers 40 bright and cozy rooms, all providing views of the surrounding nature. Most double rooms can accommodate extra beds, making it ideal for families or larger groups. During the summer months, additional rooms are available in the Annexe—originally built around 1880 as barracks during the construction of the Bergen Railway. The Annexe has been renovated to provide additional accommodations without losing its historical charm.
Vatnahalsen Hotell offers several lounges for you to unwind, including a TV lounge and a fully licensed bar known for its famous waffles. The Little Loftet Lounge, added in 2011, has panoramic views of the Reinunga Lake and surrounding mountains, comfortable sofas, and a glass-walled balcony. Additionally, the hotel's sauna also offers a relaxing place for you to unwind. For dining, the hotel's restaurant uses local ingredients, offering dishes that reflect the nature and history of the region, which locals refer to as "the taste of Skarvheimen."
