Agustina Gross

I am Uruguayan, but I have been living in Argentina for a few years now. I have always had a special connection with Argentina, in love with its landscapes and its rich and varied culture. I am passionate about nature, trekking and outdoor activities.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"We specialize in responsible tourism offering low-impact activities in nature, and in encounters with rural communities. We are always looking for authentic, unique experiences, respecting the principles of sustainable tourism"

How did you get involved in travel?

"When I was a child I used to play that I worked in a hotel and received passengers from all over the world. And I always liked to learn new languages to be able to connect with people from all over the world. At university, I got into the world of ecotourism and finally into sustainable tourism and rural community-based tourism. I found there a branch of this field that fascinated me and since then I focus on offering trips that respect the guidelines of sustainability."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"I think one of the best experiences I have had was in El Calafate. I spent a night in an old ranch house in Los Glaciares National Park. To get there you have to sail for 2 hours through the icebergs of the upsala glacier. When I saw the place where I would sleep that night I couldn't believe it. In the middle of nowhere, mountains on one side, and the azure Argentinian lake on the other. There I trekked through a canyon of ancient marine fossils, to enjoy a breathtaking view at a viewpoint of one of the most impressive glaciers of the Argentinean Patagonia. A truly unique experience I will never forget!"

We loved our trip to Buenos Aires and Patagonia, specifically El Calafate. We highly recommend both. That said, the actual execution was a mix of good and not. We were pleased with the overall planning process and the overall itinerary suggestions by Agustina and her responsiveness to questions about the trip.. However, the actual execution fell short in a few ways:

Our transfer to the local airport to fly to El Calafate was a no-show, and we didn’t get immediate response from our original local contact, who turned out to be on holiday a lot of the time we were in BA. It was very stressful, and we never got an apology or really any sympathy, just a quick refund of the cost we paid to get a taxi ourselves at 4:30 a.m. with the help of the hotel.

Speaking of the hotel, we loved the Mine Boutique Hotel in BA and would highly recommend it, but only ended up there after we asked for multiple more options from those originally suggested.

(Also the country guide materials shared with us stressed the strictness of luggage weight limits, and so we took the time to repack for El Calafate. However from what we could see, there was no apparent attention paid to many of our fellow passengers very large suitcases.)

We also requested additional options for hotels in El Calafate from the one originally suggested, and eventually without notification, when we went to review the final itinerary, the hotel to which we had agreed was not the one listed in the itinerary. Only after asking did we get a reply that the original one was no longer available, and so Agustina had booked an alternative. That one didn’t appeal to us, and set off another round of hurriedly reviewing options. We ended up at Terrazas del Calafate, which was tolerable but not great.

We had two walking tours in BA. While we were happy with them and the plan, the first one was rained out and rescheduled for the last day of our trip. That guide, Sandra, did a great job but we were surprised that she showed up without any apparent knowledge of the places that we were expecting to see that day. We then lost some time dealing with public buses over to La Boca that could have been easily saved with a taxi. No blame for Sandra, I don’t think, but someone didn’t get the message about the tour plan for the day.

On the positive side, the excursions in El Calafate were amazing: boat to Estancia Cristina, Perito Moreno glacier via both walking platforms and boat, and a day at Nibebo Aike sheep ranch including 3 hours on horseback. A note about Nibepo Aike—it is a long, bumpy ride to get there. However for us it was definitely worth it, but I wasn’t mentally expecting the gravel road trek.

As mentioned before, we highly recommend the Mine Hotel, but also generally that part of the Palermo neighborhood is a great great place to be, particularly for restaurants and shopping, as well as a base to go to other parts of the city and proximity to the National airport too.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your testimony, it is of enormous value to us.

I am sorry you did not fully enjoy your trip, knowing that all the services were provided as planned, except for the transfer you mentioned as I told you at the time, the local operator had a problem and the driver could not arrive on time. Nicolas had his days off, and his automatic message with Emilia's number, who covered those days. She was on call at the time.
We sincerely apologize for the stress caused.

Aerolineas Argentinas has strict weight conditions for your luggage. As you can see on their website, the weight allowance for bags on domestic flights is shared in the important information.

Thank you for the comment about the hotel in Buenos Aires and El Calafate. Due to availability issues, sometimes we have to change. And since you did not want the proposed hotel, we proceeded to change quickly for another option. We are always open to change in these cases and we do our best to book in the hotels we have planned, but there may be no availability. We are sorry If we were not clear about this at the moment.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. It helps us to improve our services and we are glad to know that you enjoyed your activities here as well.

The Falls were excellent to see and walk the walkways. Highly recommend the tour. The guide not great. Wish more information was provided and there was a lot of wasted time that could have been utilized elsewhere. Perhaps some of this time was due to Devils Throat not being accessible. Plus juggling the group when some did the boat ride and others didn't - rather than wasting time eating and waiting around, we could have just gone back to the hotel.

Did not find the Estancia visit worthwhile but the visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier was good. The small boat ride out to the glacier seemed like a time filler by going a long about way plus it was not great as the water was very rough. The description we had did not advise we would be in a very small boat that bounced along the waves and had water flowing in. Luckily there was four us plus our guide and the two people handling the boat. It could have handled two more people but that would not have been great. Once we got to the glacier it was okay. Good to take photos from the small boat there. I would have found it more enjoyable just driving to the glacier with a stop where we saw other boats going to the glacier and going to the glacier by boat there (we just landed there). It would have been smoother and shorter so not wasting time. The actual visit to the Perito Mereno Glacier walkways was excellent.

Instructions were not clear to others on timing and how to get to the boat as the driver did not speak English. Luckily, we knew where to go as we had been down to the beach on the previous day tour. Plus I had read it was a 40 minute walk. Unfortunately two of the people on the bus were slow and the boat was held up 15 minutes until they got to the boat. Glad the boat waited for them but they should have been advised of the time frame to get to the boat and proper instructions. Good experience to see the glacier. Not a wow but okay trip. Walking back we offered to help the slow people. It was very windy and difficult to walk back from the boat along the beach even if in good shape. Too bad the boat didn't have options to get people to and from the boat if they needed assistance or perhaps it was the fault of the instructions in not explaining the physical condition people needed to be in though I expect these two people figured they didn't need it. He was always late getting on the bus and not respectful of others time in a number of circumstances of the day.

Our arrival and tour on day 1 (Marcela our guide was excellent) in Buenos Aires went fine. Day 2 started out well. Our excellent guide, Gabriel, met us at the ferry terminal in Colonia. He had a driver with a van. We were able to keep our luggage in the van. We would have liked to have known about the ability to keep our luggage in the van ahead of time. That would’ve changed how we packed for our two nights in Montevideo.

On arriving in the Montevideo bus terminal, we could not find our driver. We walked to the different areas in the bus terminal and could not find the driver in any of the areas. If there is more than one area to meet the driver, the exact location to meet should have been prearranged.

On day 3 of our tour we were originally scheduled to meet our guide at 9 AM. This had been changed to 10 AM and we did not notice that change. It would have been very helpful if that change had been highlighted to us to make sure that we were aware of the change. Then the guide did not show up until about 10:20 AM.

Day 4 we were picked up at 8:30 AM to go to the ferry terminal. It did not take long to get our tickets and through immigration and security. We had to wait over an hour and a half before the ferry departed. Even if we left the hotel at 9 AM, that would’ve given us plenty of time to make the ferry.

It also would have been a better trip with a different itinerary. We should have gone from Montevideo to Iguazu Falls. Then we would’ve returned from Iguazu Falls and stayed in Buenos Aires for our two additional nights. This would have eliminated our three hour ferry ride from Montevideo back to Buenos Aires. In addition, it would have eliminated our 10 hour layover in the Buenos Aires airport when we flew there from Iguazu Falls and have to wait for our international flight. Our international flights would not have changed. It would’ve changed the order in which went to Iguazu Falls and back to Buenos Aires. We think this itinerary should have been suggested by the travel agent.

Overall we enjoyed the trip. Iguazu Falls and our stay at the Gran Melia hotel were the high points.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for taking the time to share your thoughts on your recent trip. It brings me great joy to learn that you enjoyed your journey!

I'd like to mention the absence of direct flights from Montevideo to Puerto Iguazu. Currently, there are no direct flights, and the route through Buenos Aires is the most practical option. We carefully considered the ferry when planning the itinerary to avoid the inconvenience of losing an entire day in transit. Opting for the ferry was a deliberate decision to streamline the travel process and enhance your overall experience.

Your valuable feedback is highly appreciated, and we will use it to continually improve our services. If there's anything else you'd like to share or suggest, please feel free to reach out.

We had issues with our flights out of the US being cancelled and our trip was delayed. Augustina went into action rescheduling our flight and other activities, so we didn’t miss anything despite our delay in arriving in Buenos Aires.

The itinerary was laid out well well and the information provided to us answered all our questions. The local tour guides were excellent (Mariana, Dario, and Sofia). They were friendly, informative and spoke good English. During our trip we visited the glaciers and farm in El Calafate that we amazing. After that we travelled to Iguazu to see the waterfalls from the Argentina and then next day from the Brazil side. Both were amazing and a must. We returned to Buenos Aires to conclude our trip with a special delicious dinner and excellent tango and the next day we did a city walking tour that was perfect before being dropped off to the airport.

Besides Augustina, Nico and Irene were both super responsive via WhatsApp. We had the team organize our drop offs/pickups, accommodations, and local flights.

Great job Augustina/Kim Kim! Thank you!

Sophie who covered our walking tour in Buenos Aires at a manageable pace and assisted us in finding a safe currency exchange outlet . Taking Uber with her sped up the sightseeing. We will return again to Argentina!

Augustina was great in helping us plan the trip around Argentina, with a great selection of sights and with flexibility. This was our 1st trip to South America and it really helped us plan, and make the most out of our time there. However, once we were there, the communication wasn´t great on important details (pick up times, duration, activities) and we were the ones having to get in touch to get the missing information, which was disappointing for a premium service and stressful at times.
The pros:
- pre trip planning with Augustina, her guidance, patience, reactivity, recommendations and tips
- some fantastic guides (special thanks to Diego in the Calchaqui valley, and Jimena in El Calafate) and amazing visits
- amazing day with residents in a local community in Cafayate
The cons:
- Lack of communication on pick-ups times, in advance!
- Some unplanned activities (3 wine tastings, which were nice but not planned and I did mention my partner can´t drink... Then going back for lunch to a city we had already visited, again not in our programme)
- Duration of tours: much longer than planned, which was ok most of the times but on the day we had to catch a connecting night bus (which they knew about, and we kept checking with the guide timings were going to be ok) they dropped us off just 5 min before the bus departure, after a mad rush in a car after being transferred out of the tour bus. Stressful, dangerous, and luckily we had enough food and water for a the 10hrs trip or it would have been very painful! Not the kind of situation you´d expect from a planned tour, and it made the whole day very stressful. And no one actually checked we got our bus ok and contacted us to apologize for the mix up.

The sight seeing was amazing, but the unplanned activities and lack of control of timings kind of made the day stressful for us.

We got picked up at 8am from Divisadero to go back to the hotel, to then only start a tour at 11am, with unplanned wine tastings, then return to Cafayate for lunch (which we didn´t know, so we had made sure to go visit Cafayate the 1st evening there, thinking we won´t get the chance again...even though we could have chilled a bit at the lovely hotel pool instead for example). The tour took so much longer than planned (even if nothing unexpected happened...so I´m not sure why timings were so off) so we were stressing about catching our bus, which ended up in a mad rush.

Dear Pauline and Joao,

Thank you so much for sharing your testimonial! I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your first trip to South America :)

We sincerely apologize for the changes made by our local operator in Salta, especially the alterations to the itinerary in Cafayate, including the wine tastings that were offered without prior notice, preventing us from accommodating one of you who doesn't consume alcohol. We have already requested the operators to provide schedules from the beginning of the tour, but due to the rainy season, they occasionally adjust the timings to fit the best moments for the circuit.

Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know. We are committed to using your comments to enhance our services.

We are thrilled that you enjoyed the interaction with the community, as it is one of the most crucial aspects for us. Thank you for choosing Community Rural Tourism for your journey!

Best wishes and a joyful 2024!

Warm regards,

Agustina

1) Several transfers had been arranged for us, of which 4 were to get us to airports in time for flights. Two of those were so late we found other ways to get to the airport. Kimkim did refund the cost of those two missed transfers, but that didn’t restore our confidence in their ability to provide timely transportation to airports. See also comments on communication below.

2) Communication was good before the trip. Agustina was our contact. When we arrived, we were assigned Nicolas as on-site contact. We met him over coffee and asked many questions. He named the person who would be our contact for the coming Saturday and Sunday when he was off. But we never were told who our contact was for our final day (Friday, a week later). That day, when our transfer was 15 minutes late, we tried in vain to contact Nicolas. Even later, we got a text from the previously-named weekend person (now working on Friday). By then we had hailed a taxi and had barely enough time to get through all the lines at the airport for our departure from the country (we’d allowed 4 hours). So, while it was helpful to have a local contact person, it was disturbing to be unable to contact him when we needed help on our last day.

3) We would have appreciated a more helpful description (i.e. what the different price ranges would be) between their strata of “comfort,” “mid-range,” and “basic,” rather than planning the whole itinerary before realizing that the total cost would be beyond our comfort zone. They did adjust things in response to our requests for less expensive accommodations and fewer arranged tours. So, we made our own lodging arrangements and chose our own activities for half the trip. We were disappointed that they didn’t give much help deciding where to splurge and where to save on our itinerary. On our last night, we were in a hotel room (booked by them) where the toilet ran continuously every time it was flushed. That hotel’s concierge, on the other hand, did an excellent job of communicating with the taxi driver we’d hailed, so that we were able to pay with the funds available to us. In the end, we had a good experience, and wish that others would be given more clarity about the prices of different options than we were.

4) The tours kimkim arranged were good, and we had a better time with the smaller groups than the large ones. For example, kimkim had scheduled our Milonga night right before being picked up in the morning for the airport at 5 am. That activity was just our guide and us, and she accommodated our request to leave the festivities at 10 pm instead of 11:30 or later. The other extreme was a boat full of people (100+). It made two stops and for each, we were told we must all be back on board at a specific time. For one of us, 50 minutes was not enough time to relax and enjoy the 0.6-mile loop path in the Bosque de Arrayanes (Myrtle Forest), much less the snack bar at the end of the path.

5) One more thing: kimkim knew our preference to communicate in English, and for the most part, paired us with competent English-speaking guides. However, the tour of Victoria Island in Lake Nauhuel Huapi was led by a Spanish-only speaker. The boat that took us there had some commentary in both languages and some only in Spanish. For the Island, we were given a firm time to return to the boat and cautioned to stay with the guide so as not to get lost (it is a larger island and has more paths than the Bosque de Arrayanes). We would have enjoyed that day better if we’d understood what was said both on the boat and on the guided tour of Victoria Island.

We appreciated our driver who negotiated everything from busy Buenos Aires traffic to the bumpy and very dusty last mile or more to the estancia with aplomb. The visit and tour of San Antonio de Areco was lovely, though it seemed a bit brief since we had to leave to get to the estancia in time for horse riding before lunch. The church, museum, and inside view of some workshops (silver, and braided fine strips of rawhide) in San Antonio de Areco were worth seeing. Our guide, Laura, was proud of her local history. At the estancia (El Ombu is not as prominent in the tourist literature but was really wonderful, and we credit Agustina for steering us to this estancia), we had lovely weather for lunch outdoors, shaded by large spreading trees. A typical asado has very little in the way of vegetables, but this one included a couple of very nice salads. A highlight of the afternoon was being invited to learn a simple dance and dance with the live musicians after their performance. The last performance of the day was a young man and a horse who performed quietly and impressively with only gentleness (aka horse whispering).

Walking tour: Palermo & Recoleta
Buenos Aires

At the request of our guide, Sandra, we met for this tour an hour later than scheduled. This is another of the small groups (just us three and the guide) that we appreciated for their individuality. Palermo and Recoleta is a large area, so we didn’t know what to expect. We did walk by highights that Sandra told us about, then went to Recoleta Cemetery. The cemetery was impressive, and Sandra drew our attention to some areas of special interest. Part of the tour, for us, was two brief rides on the subway, so we were able to see some of the art we’d heard about in the Subte system.

We can't review this because we didn't do it; our itinerary was changed because of the timing of our flights into and out of San Carlos de Bariloche. Instead, we did the Chico Circuito which did allow us to see some of the sights in beautiful Bariloche.

Milonga night
Milonga night
Buenos Aires

Melina met us on foot at our lodgings, then led us to our car and driver for the evening. First, we went to a dance studio where we had a private lesson in the basic tango step with her. As expected, I didn’t feel at all confident when the lesson was over, so when we got to the milonga (it appeared to be a hotel ballroom where the dance floor was surrounded by tables), I was filled with fears of not doing well, not being graceful, and not fitting in. Melina made things easy for us by introducing us to another tour leader, Martin who graciously agreed to dance one dance with each of us. We were grateful that Melina was willing to leave much earlier than planned (10 pm instead of 11:30 pm) because we were scheduled to leave for the airport the next morning at 5 am. The evening did leave me with more appreciation of where to start learning to dance the tango.

Gran Aventura Navigation tour
Gran Aventura Navigation tour
Puerto Iguazú

This was a very exciting (and wet) boat ride into the water splashing up from the bottom of the Devil’s Throat. We got very close to rocky shorelines and saw animals like capybaras and caymans on small beaches on the way. There were a lot of steps down (and back up) to get from the rest of the paths around the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls, and the logistics of putting everything into a dry bag, and changing into dry clothes afterward were tricky (no real locker room or place to change). It was almost warm enough to wear a swimsuit for the whole experience, but it still would have been tricky to dry off and change into dry clothes afterward. Our turn to do this boat ride was in the middle of the day, and the rest of the day was walking around on walkways where the drizzly weather and mist from the falls combined to keep us wanting our ponchos on, as well as a lot of walking that wouldn’t have been comfortable in water shoes. They managed to give a lot of people the experience, and it was fun, but we’d have appreciated a neater way to change clothes.

Full day to the Argentinian side of the falls
Full day to the Argentinian side of the falls
Argentina

This was a long day which, for us, was interrupted by the Gran Aventura Navigation Tour. We followed our guide Francisco to many viewpoints of the falls. Looking at photos or a map ahead of time didn’t prepare us for how much walking up and down would be involved, nor did the photos prepare us for how large an amount of water we’d be close to. It was thrilling! The handrails were quite slick at times, making it feel a bit less secure, though the area is designed to keep people safe. We saw capuchin monkeys cavorting in the trees, and toucans just being themselves. If I had it to do again, I’d wear a waterproof hat with a brim over the waterproof poncho to better keep my head dry. The poncho hood I had didn’t provide enough cover. Fortunately, the air temperature was warm enough that getting wet wasn’t too uncomfortable, while the drizzle kept the sun from roasting us.

Half day tour to the Iguazú Falls (Brazilian side)
Half day tour to the Iguazú Falls (Brazilian side)
Argentina

This half-day tour with Dario as our guide and Diego as our driver included quite a bit of walking with more wide panoramic views of the falls than on the Argentinian side. It was a wonderful complement to the views from Argentina. We stopped near the entrance to the park for refreshments and saw a chameleon in some rocks along the path. We got wet on walkways that went out over parts of the falls, and that was exciting! There was also a souvenir shop conveniently placed near the end of our walk. After we left the falls themselves, we visited the Birds Park (reviewed separately), and a large souvenir shop before heading back across the border. We were also given the option to take a helicopter tour over the falls which we declined in favor of more time in the Birds Park. With all the time that the border crossings took in both directions, it was more than a half-day total, but fortunately, we didn't have anything else scheduled.

Bird's Park

This was amazing. Wonderful! Loved it, and wasn’t prepared for how much we would enjoy wandering into the birds’ spaces. Some were protected from us, and others were allowed to fly right past us. It’s a refuge, so there are displays about various aspects of conservation and concerns with ecology. We were very pleased that we'd visited the Bird's Park (Parque das Aves).

Kayak in Moreno lake
Kayak in Moreno lake
Bariloche

We did this on our last morning in San Carlos de Bariloche. The weather was sunny and not too cold or windy. It was wonderful to be inside the beautiful scene of the lake and mountains we’d been seeing from shore for two days. We were outfitted with gear including water booties, a spray skirt, and a life jacket. The kayaks were very stable, and we were given basic instructions. This activity was a great contrast to walking and driving tours. However, some of us had sore arms by the end, not being accustomed to the movements of kayak paddling. We had a nice break on a tiny beach where we were served a variety of snacks and teas. Our guide, Leticia, was very helpful and shortened our outing to enable us to get changed into dry clothes and back to our hotel in time to meet our airport pickup.

Boat trip over the Nahuel Huapi lake and Victoria Island
Boat trip over the Nahuel Huapi lake and Victoria Island

This is long because there are a lot of points to be made. -We were anxious when the bus didn’t pick us up soon after 12:30, though it did eventually come. We had been switched to a different hotel and pick-up point that wasn’t written down and didn’t know who to call or text to check our information. -We had more confusion in the boat launch area because we already had our boat ticket, but needed to get a pass (the English signs said everyone needed to pay entry tax) for the park entrance later in the day. -The catamaran boat was crowded and slow, though it was equipped with a snack bar and restroom facilities. -The cruise aspect would have been more enjoyable if it had been easier to see the scenery around us (beautiful lake with mountains in the distance) out the windows but they were somewhat obscured by spray from waves on the lake. Options for clearer viewing were on a deck above the majority of passengers, reserved for some special subset, and the top of the boat which was so windy as to be unbearable for long. -Time at the two stops was shorter than we would have liked, -At one stop (Victoria Island) it was strongly suggested that we stay with the guide rather than risk getting lost. But the guide spoke only Spanish, so we missed a lot. Also, we were encouraged to stop at the snack bar there, but it took a very long time to get our order (pizza) filled, which left no time to eat it. -The amount of time on the boat felt very long compared to the short times at the two stopping places. The day was listed as 8 hours, and we spent 50 minutes at the first stop and less than 1.5 hours at the second; the rest was riding in the bus to and from the boat launch area and on the boat. -The two stopping places were disappointing, mostly because we couldn’t understand the guide who was pointing out things of interest on Victoria Island, and because we’d already seen some Arraynas trees the day before (though the Bosque de Arraynes stop this day did have more trees, we were in a hurry to be sure we’d be able to get back on the boat).

We then had a very cool tour of the Vineyard owners personal art collection by James Turrell which we were not expecting but was very cool! The lunch that followed was lovely, sitting in the sun overlooking the beautiful grounds of the Colome vineyard.

Rosa and her son Sylvestre were kind and welcoming! we had a lovely time picking oranges and making juice, chasing and feeding the chickens and enjoying the beautiful mountain views. We had a wonderful time exploring and hiking in the local area, watching the condor and vultures in their natural habitat.

This was our favorite tour in Iguazu! Our two wonderful guides were encyclopedias of knowledge, with an incredible passion, love and insight into the local birds and nature. We were lucky enough to see a plethora of incredible birds, from the woodpecker to the turkey vulture. We saw the tracks of a panther and the Jaguar and the Anteater, which was incredible. I would recommend this trip to all visiting Iguazu.

Buenos Aires

One of the best experiences we had in Argentina, and definitely our favorite night in Buenos Aires! Pierre and Graciela were fabulous hosts! We were taken on a tour of the historical tango area of Buenos Aires where we learnt all about the history of the tango, dance and music. We had an excellent time in Pierre and Graciela's home making empanadas and chatting with them and their two sons. Their genuine kindness and warmth was undeniable from the entire family and we felt so welcome and at home. We had a wonderful dinner, discussions about life and even played some tango related games!
