Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Bali, Transfer to Munduk, Explore
Welcome to Indonesia! Your adventure begins when you land on Bali, nicknamed the "Island of Gods" because of its many Hindu temples. Your private driver will collect you from the airport for a 45-minute transfer to the town of Munduk, known for some of the best coffee on the island, its surrounding waterfalls, hiking opportunities, and fewer tourists. Located on the cooler, greener side of the island, Munduk has plenty of outdoor activities, from seeking out secluded waterfalls to hiking panoramic vistas. Settle into your hotel, then set off to explore the area.
For high-flying fun, head to Munduk's Twin Lakes, where you'll find bridges and swings that take you directly over the water. You can also taste the famous kopi luwak (coffee made from beans that have passed through the digestive tract of a small local mammal) at Munduk Moding Plantation or pose for photos at the Insta-famous Wanagiri Hidden Hills. Leave plenty of time to rest and recover for the rest of your trip.
Day 2: Balinese Cooking Class, Trek to Umejero Waterfall
This morning, you'll join a half-day cooking class in Munduk to learn how to make several typical Balinese dishes. Follow your guide to the local market to pick fresh ingredients, then head to a coconut plantation to tap the trees for their sap, used in making arak, a distinct Balinese liquor. Following this, you'll meet your chef, who will demonstrate various techniques to create authentic Balinese dishes, such as lawar (finely minced spiced meat) and bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck in banana leaves). Finish your lesson with a sampling of different types of arak after your meal.
Experience several of the cascades Munduk (known as the "waterfall capital of Bali") is famous for on a three-hour guided hike after lunch. Your first stop will be the town of Umejero, renowned for its coffee and clove plantations. Hike through these fields to Umejero Falls, a truly off-the-beaten-path spot with orange rock walls and a natural pool at the base. Meet locals on the trail as you follow the flat dirt path along the stream toward the hidden three-pronged Santhipala Falls, about 25 minutes away. Cool off in the water before heading back to your hotel in Munduk.
Day 3: Discover Tamblingan Lake & Sekumpul Waterfalls
Explore more of the countryside around Munduk today, starting with a half-day excursion to Tamblingan Lake, a quiet spot away from the popular tourist trails. Enjoy the views and tranquility of the glass-like waters, and if weather permits, see more of the lake with a ride in a traditional canoe. Visit the small temples dotted around the lakeshore, including the beautiful Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, which dates back to the 10th century.
In the afternoon, it's time for another off-the-beaten-path adventure to the powerful Sekumpul Waterfalls, several 262-foot-high (80 m) cascades that rush down the side of green mountains to the lush valley below. Considered Bali's best waterfall, you'll have the option of hiking to the viewing spot above the valley, heading down to the base of the falls and continuing to the nearby Hidden Falls, or trekking even farther to the three cascades of Fiji Falls, a short hike along the creek.Day 4: Transfer to Ubud via Ulun Danu Beratan, Local Rumah Desa & Monkey Forest
Meet your driver for a two-hour transfer from Munduk to Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali. Along the way, you'll make several scenic stops, starting at one of Bali's most iconic landmarks, Ulun Danu Beratan—a 17th-century complex of distinctive multi-tiered shrines on the shores of Lake Beratan set against a backdrop of misty mountains. Wander through the beautiful botanical gardens or among the five temples dedicated to Hindu deities. The main temple, dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Dewi Danu, is an important religious site for the Balinese.
Then, you'll visit a nearby village and a locally owned rumah desa (village house). Join a local guide on a tour of the village school, interact with the villagers, and get an inside glimpse of traditional Balinese life. Visit the vibrantly green rice fields to discover Balinese agricultural techniques, including traditional irrigation methods and tools. Then, savor the end of your tour with a meal prepared by the locals featuring regional Balinese dishes, like beef rendang (spicy dry curry) and sate ayam (chicken skewers with peanut sauce).
Continue to the protected Sangeh Monkey Forest, a jungle home to hundreds of macaques running free among ancient Balinese temples and giant trees. Sit under the shade of the pala (nutmeg) trees—not found anywhere else in Bali—as they cast their shadow over the mossy temple of Pura Bukit Sari Sangeh. Admire this hidden masterpiece, established by the Mengwi Kingdom in the 17th century as a meditation center and now guarded by the many resident monkeys. Remember to respect the rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the monkeys and yourself. End the day relaxing at your hotel in Ubud.
Day 5: Explore Tegalalang Rice Terraces, Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi & Tibumana Falls
Prepare for a full day touring Bali's temples and nature around Ubud, starting with the spectacular Tegalalang Rice Terrace, a landscape of verdant terraces carved into steep hillsides. Spend an hour exploring. Hop on the swing, get an aerial view of the terraces on a thrilling zipline ride, and then trek down to see the Balinese method of cooperative farming and the traditional irrigation system called subak. Nearby, you'll find several Balinese villages where you can witness local life and culture, including artisans creating handicrafts like wood carvings and batik textiles.
Follow this with a spiritual experience at nearby Tirta Empul, an ornate Hindu water temple compound that has served as a sacred site for over 1,000 years. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes to join the many locals who come for ritual purification beneath the waterspouts that pour into a series of sacred bathing pools. Respectfully observe locals praying at the shrine or receiving cleansing in the spring-fed ponds and spend time walking around this peaceful compound, learning about the rich traditions of Balinese Hindu culture.
Next, enjoy a guided tour of Gunung Kawi Temple, where you can see the impressive collection of shrine reliefs carved into the rocks of this ancient archaeological site and admire the far-reaching views of the lush valley below. End the day exploring the hidden beauty of Tibumana Waterfall. Head with your driver to a secluded spot in the countryside, where you'll walk for 15 minutes through the tropical Balinese jungle to reach the waterfall. Admire the natural wonder from afar and then dip your feet in the calm waters at the base of the falls before returning to your hotel in Ubud.
Day 6: Rafting on Telaga Waja River, Visit Goa Gajah Cave
Gear up for three exhilarating hours of whitewater rafting through tropical jungles on a 9-mile (14 km) rafting trip on the Telaga Waja River this morning. Start with a safety briefing and instructions from your rafting guide, then paddle through thrilling rapids, discover villages amid lush greenery, and witness cascading waterfalls along the river's edge. Expert guides will lead you through the twists and turns of the river, so this activity is open to beginners and seasoned rafters alike. Conclude your adventure with a local lunch by the riverside.
End the day with a visit to Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave. This mysterious Hindu temple and archaeological site is thought to date back to the 11th century. Admire the intricate rock-wall carvings, bathing pools, fountains, and otherworldly rock formations. Then, quietly enter the meditation cavern through the monstrous carved "mouth" while respectfully giving privacy to the local worshippers inside.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 7: Mountain Biking from Batur to Ubud
This morning's adventures begin early, as you're picked up from your hotel for a four-hour cycling tour through 18 miles (30 km) of forest trails, farm tracks, and back roads. Set off at the well-known volcano, Mount Batur, overlooking Kintamani Lake, and cycle past historic Hindu temples, local communities, and verdant plantations. You'll make stops to explore a traditional Balinese village, take in the scenery from various viewpoints, and drop in at farm stands to sample exotic fruits from the source. The ride ends in Ubud, where you'll transfer back to your hotel.Day 8: Transfer to Candidasa via Besakih Temple & Taman Ujung Water Palace
Meet your driver this morning for a two-hour transfer to Candidasa, stopping to visit several sites along the way. Begin your tour at the Great Mother Temple of Bali, Besakih, the largest and most significant Hindu temple complex on the island. Situated on the slopes of volcanic Mount Agung, enjoy far-reaching views of mountains and rice paddies surrounding the complex of over 80 temples and shrines, each dedicated to a different deity. The temple dates back to the eighth century, and despite being located in an active volcanic area, it has survived numerous eruptions and earthquakes over the years.
Your next highlight is a visit to Taman Ujung, a floating palace set in a peaceful and relaxing garden. Wander along the walking paths and over the bridges of this sprawling 25-acre (10 ha) compound with ponds filled with koi fish, landscaped gardens, and shrines. According to local legend, Taman Ujung is believed to have fertility powers. As a result, you may see young couples making offerings or posing for wedding photos. Explore the gardens and discover beautiful natural surroundings with fabulous views of the Lombok Strait in the distance.
Continue your transfer to the seaside town of Candidasa. Sitting on the edge of Candi Dasa Lagoon on the east coast of Bali, this peaceful oasis is home to quiet beaches, turquoise waters, and views of Mount Agung in the distance. Check into your hotel, where you'll spend three nights exploring nearby sites, relaxing on the beaches, and enjoying the sunsets.
Day 9: See Tirta Gangga Water Palace & Pasir Putih Beach, Explore Candidasa
Your first stop of the day is the Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a tranquil Hindu water garden and temple complex 35 minutes away on the eastern part of the island. Built in the early 20th century by the King of Karangasem, this enchanting water park features a collection of pools, fountains, and statues, all amid lush greenery with far-reaching views of the surrounding mountains. Walk along the octagonal stepping stones and feed the carp, bathe in one of the spring-fed pools, or wander among the vibrant flowers and intricate sculptures as you observe locals praying at 11 of the 13 water spouts.
After a morning of temple exploration, continue to Pasir Putih Beach, tucked away in the village of Perasi. Walk along the white sand of this secluded beach, enjoying panoramic ocean views and indulging in water activities like swimming or snorkeling. Stop at one of the warungs (streetside vendors) lining the beach for fresh seafood or cold drinks, then once you've soaked up the sun, return to your hotel in Candidasa, where you'll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore at your leisure.
If you're after more beach time, visit Candidasa Beach, a lively stretch of sand popular for beachcombing and snorkeling. For a quieter spot, head to White Sand Beach, a "secret" beach with beautiful white sand and gentle waves. There are few amenities here, but you may find a few vendors with umbrella or chair rentals available.
Day 10: Day Trip to Sidemen via Lempuyang Temple
Discover Bali's strong arts and crafts traditions on today's excursion to the town of Sidemen, about an hour away from Candidasa. First, you'll visit Lempuyang, one of the island's oldest and most holy temples on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, one of Bali's highest mountains. Climb 1,700 steps up the mountain to reach the temple, admire the panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape, and explore several intricately designed, smaller shrines. For incredible views of Bali's highest volcano, Mount Agung, visit the famous Gate of Heaven, the iconic gateway that frames the volcano.
After visiting the temple, continue to the traditional Balinese village of Sidemen, where you'll discover textile manufacturing workshops and witness the age-old Indonesian weaving techniques of ikat and songket, characterized by their intricate designs. Ikat involves tie-dyeing yarn before weaving, while songket incorporates gold or silver threads into the fabric. Watch as craftspeople at the loom transform raw materials into complex patterns and designs, and learn about the creation of cloth for sarongs—a piece worn by men, women, and children of all ages in Bali.
Day 11: Transfer to Sanur via Bias Tugel Beach
Say farewell to Candidasa today and join your driver for a 1.5-hour transfer south toward Sanur. Along the way, you'll stop at Bias Tugel Beach, a small secluded bay with a 426-foot (130 m) stretch of sand hidden from the busy Padangbai harbor by a long, narrow peninsula. You can easily reach the beach by taking a short trek past the cape from the main road. Grab snacks and a cold beer, or rent a parasol from one of the local vendors. Then, soak in the beautiful seascape with calm blue waves, explore the rock pools, and lay your towel on the golden sand with streaks of volcanic black.
From there, make your way with your driver to Sanur. Once you've checked into your hotel, you'll have the remainder of the afternoon and evening free. Wander along the beachfront, admiring the brightly colored jukung fishing boats, snorkel offshore, and swim in the clear waters. In the evening, watch the sunset from the heights of Bukit Peninsula or sample Indonesian street food at the Sanur Night Market.
Day 12: Fly to Labuan Bajo, Komodo Cruise Day 1: Kelor, Rinca & Kalong
The next phase of your adventure begins today, as you transfer 30 minutes from Sanur to the airport to catch a 45-minute flight to Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. Upon arrival, a driver will be waiting to transfer you to the local port, where you'll board a yacht for a two-night sailing adventure around the spectacular islands of the Komodo archipelago. After settling into your cabin, enjoy the seaside views as you navigate the Flores Sea and the waters of Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for being home to the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon.
Sail first to the uninhabited island of Pulau Kelor, a tiny piece of paradise known for its white-sand beach—a prime spot for relaxing, snorkeling, swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking. Set off on a steep, 10-minute hike to the island's highest point for rewarding views of the surrounding islands and sea. On your way back down, look for exotic birds and other wildlife before continuing your island hop while enjoying lunch on board.
Disembark next at Rinca Island to join a local ranger who will lead you to panoramic viewpoints over the archipelago, teach you about native wildlife, and point out the national park's endemic Komodo dragons in the wild. End the day with a picture-perfect sunset at Kalong Island, also known as "Flying Foxes Island," due to the large population of bats that inhabit the mangrove-covered islet. Weigh anchor at dusk to witness the memorable moment when around 300,000 of these bats take flight into the setting sun for their nightly hunt.
Day 13: Komodo Cruise Day 2: Padar & Komodo
Set sail to Padar Island today, where you'll begin an early-morning trek across the rugged but beautiful landscape to reach the island's highest point for views of the archipelago. Watch for wildlife such as deer, wild boar, and various bird species as you climb. The steep staircase can be challenging in places, but once you're at the viewpoint, you'll marvel at the sight below of beaches in three different colors: black, pink, and white. Trek down to the famous Pink Beach, which gets its rosy hue from ground coral fragments.
Relax on the beach, snap a few photos, swim, and snorkel at the offshore reef to see tropical fish and sea turtles. Then, gear up for the next adventure—Komodo Island, one of the best places in the archipelago to spot the Komodo dragon, which lives nowhere else on Earth. These huge lizards can grow up to 9.8 feet (3 m) and average 150 pounds (70 kg). Then, hop in the water to snorkel at the famous Manta Point, known for its large population of resident manta rays. Strap on your mask and fins, and swim among these gentle, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Day 14: Komodo Cruise Day 3: Sebayur & Kanawa, Fly to Uluwatu (Bali)
Continue your island-hopping tour of the Flores Sea and the Komodo archipelago by snorkeling above the colorful coral reefs surrounding Sebayur Island. Thanks to its visibility, this is a favorite spot for underwater photography, so have your camera ready. Then, sail to Kanawa Island and Bidadari Island, both popular snorkeling destinations. Gear up and dive into the crystal-clear waters surrounding the islands to see the diverse marine life, including colorful tropical fish like clownfish and parrotfish, sea turtles, and even sharks.
When ready, climb aboard for lunch and set sail back to Labuan Bajo. Upon disembarking, you'll be transferred to the airport for your one-hour flight back to Denpasar, where a driver awaits to whisk you toward the beautiful Balinese region of Uluwatu on the island's southern tip, a 1.5-hour drive. Check into your hotel and then spend the afternoon relaxing on the nearby beaches, like Uluwatu Beach or Padang Padang.
Day 15: Depart Bali
Spend your final morning in Bali visiting the dramatic Uluwatu Temple. Perched atop a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, the temple's architecture dates back to the 11th century and showcases the rich history of Balinese Hinduism. At the appointed time, your driver will pick you up at your hotel and transfer you to Denspar International Airport. Sampai jumpa lagi (see you again soon), and safe travels!
