Prior to this trip I had never used a travel specialist, but I knew that a road trip along the southern coast of Iceland would require local knowledge. After a short session with the kimkim rep, I was matched with Emanuela. She is the best! Emanuela created an itinerary that included everything on our bucket list. We received our trip details well in advance, and were able to make adjustments as needed. Each adventure was so fun, well-timed, and led by friendly, knowledgeable guides. Some real standouts were the buggy adventure in the Golden Circle by Amazing Tours and kayaking the Glacier Lagoon with Iceguide. The hotels selected for us were comfortable. The staff at City Center Hotel in Reykjavík could not have been nicer. Emanuela and her team came through when we needed them most. Two days into our trip, I got a call that one of our boat tours had been cancelled. As soon as I messaged Emanuela, she went into problem solving mode. She was able to arrange for a different Puffin tour later in our trip. It was such a relief to know that I didn't have to pause my trip to figure out what to do. It put us at ease knowing that there was someone local for us to contact if (when) we needed anything. I highly recommend planning your trip with Emanuela!!

This was a once in a lifetime experience! Everywhere you looked felt like a National Geographic photograph. If you enjoy kayaking, this is by far the best way to experience the glaciers. We saw glaciers collide and flip (from a safe distance) and seals playing in the lagoon. Our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable.

Hiking on a glacier was a unique experience. The ice cave itself is short (we went in July) but beautiful. This special place is ever changing, so no two trips will be the same. Our guide was knowledgeable and patient as everyone on the tour made their way over and around the glacier.

We worked with Gummi who emailed and FaceTimed with us to really understand what our family of four wanted from our first vacation in this spectacular country. He NAILED it! My husband and I were traveling with twin 12 year old boys who couldn’t be more different. Gummi was able to squeeze in adventures that appealed to all of us, suggested whatever to see, where to eat and how much time to spend at each location of our itinerary. He was available during our vacation if a question popped up and was a pleasure to work with every step of the way. We have so many favorite spots but I’d say our top few were: our first stop after our flight at Sky Lagoon (we preferred Sky Lagoon over Blue Lagoon), our cliffside walk at Arnarstapi (we never would’ve known to do this without Gummi), our Katla Glacier Ice Cave Hike, and of course driving from spot to spot looking at the gorgeous scenery and hiking to waterfalls. I suspect we’ll use Kim Kim on another vacation and would absolutely request to work with Gummi again!

We walked to restaurants, coffee shops, sites and the sky voyager. We loved the location. Just to set expectations… It was a bit noisy but that’s what you get in a city! If you want to be close to everything, it’s not going to be silent like a campervan in the forest. Having said that, staying near everything far outweighed any noise. We were always too tired to notice it and slept fine in the comfy beds!

The Blue Lagoon is iconic and was super cool but if you can only visit one hot springs, I’d visit Sky Lagoon as it seems more natural and less touristy. (my preference) Having said that, I’m glad we did both. If you’re planning to visit both, do Blue Lagoon first then Sky Lagoon and maybe work in a visit to a hot springs off the beaten path. I’d say visiting the hot springs was a highlight and though the waterfalls of Iceland are spectacular, thee hot springs are sublime!

Beautiful ride, but guide gave no instruction or information once we left the barn. She didn't check to see how we were doing, or give any information about the tölt or when we would be changing gaits. The guide was German, and did speak more to 2 German participants, but I have no idea what they talked about. I don't think there is a problem with this activity, just with the particular guide we had.

This review is a little complicated because our original planner left of after the majority of the planning was completed. Jenny finished up and then we worked with another person (Michele?) who helped with some issues during actual travel.

I would say this:
1. Do your own homework. Most things worked out but some went frustratingly poorly. For one of our overnight stays, we were provided the wrong address of the apartment. It was only by luck that the owner of the "wrong place" was able to help us find the correct place. Otherwise, we would have been stuck without boarding for the night.

2. On another occasion, an excursion was canceled. No problem - it happens - but the KimKim team repeatedly told us it was a different outing that was canceled. It took longer than it should have to sort that out.

3. At the beginning of the planning, we asked for the most high-end stay in Reykjavik. We were booked into a hotel and, to be fair, did not check it out on our own. After we arrived in the city, it was very clear there were more upscale options available.

4. At one hotel, we stayed in a room - the ONLY ROOM! - that did not have a private bath. It was located in a common hallway. We specifically asked about this ahead of time (based on reviews) and was told it was "all good." It was not. We wrote to the KimKim team and the responder, Michele (Iceland Off Beat, maybe?), could not have been more rude in their reply. To be frank - even if theythought we were to blame (ridiculous), its just not ok to take such a hostile position.

Those issues aside - great trip and good planning. But folks need to do their homework to confirm every detail.

This was undoubtedly the lowlight of the trip. To be clear – we did not see any foxes but that is not the reason for the poor review. It’s nature, and you get what you get. The main reason is that we were given extremely little time to see them. What was billed as a day looking for them turned out to be a very different experience. We were actively looking for them for perhaps 90 minutes or so, after a hike to old whale processing plant, lunch and then an early break for dinner. We had two guides. One, to be fair, tried to be engaging and helpful. The other, named Frosti, was completely disengaged, unhelpful and even expressed agitation towards the group when we asked questions about looking in different places, etc. He did not want to look for the foxes before low tide (even though he wasn’t sure when that was, saying just “sometime in the afternoon.”). He did not want to leave the beach area because “they come here to eat.” Yes, we suggested, but they are coming from SOMEWHERE, so can we walk about to different places? He just sat down and literally started picking flowers. All in all, I’d say two things: (1) be up front about the experience. It’s not a day looking for foxes. It’s not even half a day. It’s a small part of the day; and (2) the company needs to better train its guides. Again, the woman (Lara, I think) at least provided some information and engaged with the group, and led us on a hike before lunch. And even though we all would have preferred spending that time looking for foxes, Frosti could not have cared less about us or our experience. He just sat on the bench and said, in essence, do what you want but be back for lunch. I’m curious to see what other kinds of reviews show up elsewhere, because our group (about 10 of us overall) were all clearly annoyed by it all. Some specifically came to Iceland for this experience and were very disappointed.

Dear Stephen and Ellen,
Thank you for your honest review.
Although it’s hard to hear you were unhappy with certain aspects of your trip, I am glad you shared this information with us. I have taken each of your points seriously and addressed the issues direct with tour operators and accommodation providers as needed.
I pride myself in providing a personal service to everyone who books with me, focusing on the finer details and meeting the specific needs of each person.

There was a mistake in providing you with the incorrect address for one of your lodgings, we are truly sorry about this. The accommodation provider has two separate accommodation address and you were given the wrong one. This should not have happened. I am glad that you quickly called our emergency number and along with the accommodation providers help we were able to resolve the issue promptly. Your accommodation was booked correctly and you would by no means have been left without accommodation for the night.

In regards to the cancelled puffin tour. One tour operator shut down their summer operations prior to your trip and we discussed and arranged an alternative option before you arrived into Iceland. This replacement tour was then unfortunately cancelled due to the weather. This I understand was very disappointing for you as seeing the puffin in Iceland was on the top of your bucket list. I am glad you were able to take the tractor and hay cart ride tour so you were still able to see Iceland’s beautiful puffin.

You booked standard accommodation which covers 2 and 3 star hotels and guesthouses with breakfast where available. We booked you into Fosshotel Baron which is a highly rated 3 star hotel with breakfast and was the best option available, and at the higher end of this category, at the time of booking. Had we know in advance that this was not suitable we would have been more than happy to find a different hotel for you that better met your expectations.

The issue with the private bathroom was unfortunate and you certainly were not to blame for any miss understanding. The guesthouse assured us that your bathroom was private, we even double checked with them at your request before you arrived. Although the bathroom was for your use only, it was unfortunately not attached to your room and we were not made aware of this even after double checking with the guesthouse directly.

I am glad that your overall experience was a good one and that even despite some disappointments you enjoyed your trip to Iceland. Thank you for travelling with us and happy travels for the future!

Not only does KimKim provide a local contact and numbers in case of an emergency, but all of the places and hotels that Hanna booked for us were in easy to get to locations with friendly staff and were within walking distance of local spots.

Eldhestar is definitely a busy place. But I have to say they are very organized and everyone gets where they need to be. It was raining on the day we went but they provide you will full rain gear and boots which was great. We didn't have to worry about our stuff getting dirty or wet. The team pairs you with a horse based on your experience. The main guide was stern but I think you have to be to keep a group of mostly novice riders safe. Mid way through the ride the guides check on how everyone is doing and offer riding tips which was nice. We did the very basic Siggi tour which was great for the first time being on a horse in a very long time. Basic doesn't mean boring- right away we rode the horses through a small river which was very exciting! At the end I definitely wanted to go riding again- which to me is a sign of a good experience.

Stern, but attentive which is exactly what you what in a horse riding guide. We also had a very nice woman from Sweden who was the guide at the back of the group. Mid way she rode up next to everyone and checked on each person individually to make sure they were comfortable and having a good time.

LOVED this experience! The ride out to the cape is very dramatic over the black sand in an open air tractor. Our guide Matthias was excellent providing interesting history of the area and about the wildlife. We still laugh about his safety tip he shared (which he attributes to his brother) - "if you face plant your face should still land on the cliff, if not your too close" ; ) Excellent advice! You could tell that he cared about his family's connection to the cape.

Quality of Experience
The drive out and walk up the black sand of the cape is unforgettable. The puffins are amazing to see that close up and you get two different views from the front and back of the cape.

Our trip was beyond amazing! Adam was so helpful in listening to our ideas and things we wanted to do while in Iceland and made it all happen! We don’t always feel the need to do all the most popular places and wanted some “off the beaten path” ideas. Adam provided a great mix of both! We loved our journey and stay to and on the Westman Islands! We did alittle hiking, learned about the island, saw puffins, the Belugas (Little White and Little Grey!), and had amazing dinner. Our Zodiak excursion got us “up close & personal” with the icebergs, glacier, and a lazy harbor seal! :).
We also loved our journey to Katla Ice cave, glacier, black desert sands and met an Arctic fox named Frosty! We even happened to run into one of our Katla guide a cpl days later in a different town. Our horseback riding tour within the Golden Circle was also memorable! It was just us. So personal; just us and our guide. They have such a wonderful place with beautiful horses and scenery! All our guides on our excursions were so friendly and provided wonderful experiences! I cannot say enough good things about this trip! Each day was planned but provided many other options along with accurate and specific driving directions for each stop and links with the optional stops as well. Took off so much of the stress of trying to figure distances and time needed for the days’ travels. I would highly recommend Adam and KimKim and would use them again to other places that would require help in the planning. Thanks again Adam and KimKim!

Migle helped us plan a perfect month-long trip to Scandinavia. She was easily reachable while we were traveling, which made us feel well taken care of. She came up with great activities and hotels and had all of the transportation worked out perfectly for a smooth trip.

There were things that she recommended that I would have never thought of or planned that we all enjoyed-- like the zip line/biking in Flam, Norway. That was a really fun day. Our overnight kayaking trip out of Bergen was great as well. Our guide Michael was great and we stayed at a beautiful historic farmhouse on a remote island which really made the trip easy (and my wife much happier that she wasn't going to be on the ground in a tent!)

Our 4-day trek in Iceland was perfect as well and was the highlight of our trip. Iceland has many beautiful places to see but you really get a feel for the geology and scenery when you get to the interior (away from the tourists) and hike between the remote huts.

The recommendations for things to see and do gave us a great starting point for our explorations of all the cities and natural sites we visited (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, the fjords, and Iceland). The restaurant recommendations also helped a lot.

Migle arranged for all the transfers by train, which was fun since we don't use them much at home. The recommendations for the Copenhagen Card (free museums and transit) and the app for Stockholm's system made travel easy and enabled us to see more than we would have had we needed to pay each time. Super convenient and helpful.

It was a really memorable trip for our family and we're really appreciative of Migle and KimKim for making it easy.

Loved the location for this hotel-- on the water and near the palace. We had a family room and crammed 4 of us in it. It was very tight for 4. The service was great and the breakfast was perfect. My complaints are the size of that room was small and the windows in the historic building are small. The dining area where breakfast is served doesn't look out at the water (not sure if it was because of construction or if that's permanent). Otherwise a great place to stay.

I was angry when we arrived and got to our room (but calmed down...) I thought it looked a lot better online but our room, according to my son, looked like his dorm room. It was pretty sterile, faced an interior courtyard, and was cut into two pieces so our bedroom had no window. It was decent sized, though, and in a good location. The breakfast was good but you had to get there early or you would have trouble finding a table.

We had a room in the restaurant building and it was tight but worked well for our family of 4. We had views of the fjords and were next to their restaurant, bar, and all the local attractions. The staff was great and they had a great place to store our luggage on our last day. It worked out well. I will say that, if there's a cruise ship in town (which there was our first day) it's parked right in front so the view of the fjord becomes a city view of a 20 story building... But we only had a ship there 1 day during our stay.

I love this hotel (but I'm a sucker for historic hotels!) It's a huge wooden building on the water near the ferry terminal. There are tons of public lounge spaces and a great outdoor deck for having lunch, tea, etc. There's a fancy restaurant and a cafe which also serves on the deck. The food was great-- lunch and breakfasts. Our room was large and had a large deck looking out over the fjord. The bathrooms are a little funky because of the old building but worked fine. Our kids had a corner room with views in every direction and two decks. It was a little tight with two beds but the funky shape and ceilings made it really cool for them. I was sad we were only staying one night here. I would have loved to stay longer, with the hotel as one of the main attractions (although Balestrand is beautiful and there's lots of hiking, biking, water-related activities to do from here).

Hafnarfjörður

I warned my family before we arrived-- this is going to be "something"... And it was! The viking village is a crazy restaurant/shop and hotel all decked out in faux viking motif. The lodging is really like a motel. We had two rooms in the main building and they were fine. Our kid's room was pretty tight but ours was a little bigger. The baths felt like those in an RV but were fine. I think that the little cabins would have been really fun to stay in. We peeked in while they were being cleaned and they had a large bed downstairs and smaller beds in the loft area. Our kids would have enjoyed that. We got in late and left early so didn't get to eat at the restaurant but got to go inside while they were doing some work on it. It's huge and really decked out with historic pictures and artifacts. It reminded me of a viking Trader Vic's or tiki bar. The buffet at the hotel was okay and the dining room was pretty crazy as well-- indoor pond and waterfall and faux stone ceilings and walls. It's definitely a thing and we were happy we stayed there for the experience.

This is a large hotel in a very small town. It's where buses seem to pickup and drop-off for trips away from Reykjavik. I was surprised by the size when we got there. It looks a little like a self-storage center from the outside because it's all correlated metal but our room was really nice and very large. We had our own hot tub (although it wasn't really private and we had to go out the front door and around to get to it). Very nice, though!! The hot tub was super clean and warm. The room was really clean and bright too. The hotel also has two large public hot tubs and saunas and other facilities. The dining room is bright with lots of windows and the food was very good. The staff was super helpful. They also do laundry overnight for you (I think it was about $20/load). That really helped us and we didn't have to waste a few hours doing it ourselves (which almost cost as much when we did it in Bergen). My only complaint is the design just seemed a little sterile inside and out.

Then we pulled into a small harbor and walked to our historic farmhouse where we stayed the night. The farmhouse was great-- we all had nice beds, a warm wonderful meal. There was a great fireplace that helped warm us up after a little rain got us right as we were pulling up. We had a great breakfast and then headed out again. Our second day, we had a problem with high winds so we hiked the island, which was fantastic, and then got a boat ride back. Michael, our guide, was fantastic and made us some great Norwegian fish soup for dinner (sadly not with fish we caught...) The kayaks were great and the house was amazing. LAUGAVEGUR 4-DAY HUT TO HUT TREKKING TOUR (1/4)

This was the highlight of our trip-- for the whole family. We got picked up in Reykjavik and taken 3-4 hours to the starting point. We hiked and then stayed in our first hut (after a visit to sit in the nearby hot spring!) The scenery on the trip was amazing. You really get a different sense of Iceland than you do by chasing the attractions around the ring. Instead of looking up at the mountains and glaciers, you're in them. At the end of our 2nd day, I think the scenery was the most beautiful I'd ever seen. The valley we looked down into (and ended up staying in that night) had pointy volcanoes, rivers, glaciers, lakes all in a vivid green setting. It was really beautiful. That hut, right on the lake, had incredible views as well. The huts were perfect. They're rustic and you share large rooms with your fellow guests. I was worried about that for my family but it was perfect. Fortunately no loud snorers... You work together to help cook and clean the dishes. The food was great and they accommodated everyone's diet issues. You make a bag lunch for the hike before heading out. Vans move your luggage from hut to hut so you only need a small daypack. That makes it really nice for hiking. The first day was pretty short. The second day was long-- about 18miles. The third and fourth days were medium. The days are long and there's no rush so it's not too hard. We were all tired after 18 miles but a nice, hot shower, and some good warm food revived everyone. There are showers-- you have to pay for hot water (definitely worth it!) and you can buy the tickets on-site with cash/card/phone. So that's easy. Some huts have snacks and drinks to sell as well. A beer at the 3 hut was really welcome...

it has been wonderful to connect with you and I thank you for your trust in the past 4 years since your trip was canceled back in 2020 up to the rebooking this year. I really appreciate it a lot!

All the best to both of you,
Emanuela

They were very responsive. We couldn’t be happier - I highly recommend Kimkim and Preeti. Thank you!

This was fun and the best part for me was the drive across smoldering lava fields to get there.
