Chic boutique hotel in historic Palma center, offering modern rooms, a private rooftop pool, spa, and attentive service

Overview

Summum Boutique Hotel Meliá Collection sits on a quiet street in Palma's historic Old Town, just a few minutes from two popular avenues and numerous cultural sites. The former 16th-century Can Berga-Ladària Palace was renovated in 2017 into the stunner it is today, a 5-star luxury hotel with plush furnishings and high-end amenities, with some elegant rooms offering balconies. Character-full details are found throughout, like high ceilings, wood beams, and preserved 19th-century frescoes, and guests can enjoy the rooftop terrace with a plunge pool, a unique wellness center in a converted cistern, and a stylish restaurant housed in the palace's former stables.

Pros
  • Enjoy a location within walking distance from most of Palma's sites, as you'll be just a few minutes from La Rambla and Passeig del Born streets.
  • The hotel sits in a 16th-century palace with 19th-century painted ceiling frescoes, original windows, and marble staircases.
  • Guests can relax beneath the beautiful coffered ceiling of the library lounge with a book or game.
  • Relax on the rooftop sun deck and cool off with a dip in the small pool, which is perfect for a quiet sunbathing session.
  • The spa area, located in an old cistern under vaulted ceilings, is open 24 hours.
  • Dine on breakfast eats in the on-site Equus restaurant in the palace's former stables.
  • Gymgoers can use the free pass Summum Boutique Hotel offers to work out at a nearby gym facility.
Cons
  • You'll have to plan ahead to secure a spot for the small, often fully booked rooftop pool.
  • In colder months, breakfast is served in a wine cellar that some guests reported is dark and somewhat cramped.
  • Rooms on lower floors can experience noise from the nearby school and morning garbage collection.

Authenticity

Once a medieval palace owned by the Ca'n Berga-Ladària and Ca'n Vidal families, this historic five-story property seamlessly blends original 16th-century details and 19th-century renovations with a much more recent update (a la the 21st century). In 2017 the building underwent renovations to make it the elegant hotel that it is with the help of Pamplona interior designer Elvira Blanco. The architecture, design, and decor offer a special experience thanks to preserving past centuries elements from original stone floors and a vaulted cistern to painted frescoed and wood coffered ceilings.

Location

Summum Boutique Hotel is on a cobblestoned street in Palma's historical center across from a picturesque church and surrounded by Gothic architecture. The city's famous giant ficus tree (Ficus de La Misericòrdia) is just 3 minutes away on foot, though you can keep going another minute or so to reach buzzy La Rambla. You can also walk to the Passeig del Born shopping street in 3 minutes, Plaça Major in 10, and the Almudaina Palace and Palma Cathedral with its waterfront Parc de la Mar in about 12 minutes.

Rooms & Bathrooms

You'll have your choice of 18 rooms, all with refined, (mostly) monochromatic decor and furnishings with wood floors and plush rugs, plus amenities like feather-topped mattresses, bathroom kits, and the option to borrow hair styling tools. Beds have 600-thread count Egyptian cotton monogrammed sheets. Upgraded units add more space, seating areas with muted pink velvet-upholstered chester sofas, and balconies or terraces. For a little extra history, book the highest-tiered suite, Suite Parietti, which features a ceiling fresco by the 19th-century Mallorcan artist Francesc Parietti. Or, for a bit of luxury, grab the Singular Junior Suite with its massive marble bathroom and soaking tub.

Amenities

1874 Lounge Bar & Terrace serves a la carte breakfast, snacks, and a full bar menu to the enclosed first-floor courtyard, rooftop terrace, and 19th-century Library Club, a visually decadent lounge. A buffet breakfast spread is offered in the polished Equus restaurant space, once the palace's stables. The rooftop has a solarium and a small outdoor wading pool and sun deck with loungers, where you can also enjoy drinks and snacks ordered during bar hours. The 24/7 basement spa, set in the palace's former cistern, features a jetted tub, glass-fronted Finnish sauna, and treatment area. Summum Boutique Hotel has a ramp, an elevator, and one adapted room for those who use wheelchairs.

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome at Summum. Children aged 14 and older are charged as adults; there are reduced rates for kids aged 3-13, and babies up to age two stay for free. The hotel has cots and cribs to add to any room, and a babysitting service is available. The breakfast has kids' options, and the hotel is stroller-friendly.
