Fosshotel Baron, Reykjavík

3.5 (22 reviews) · Standard
Historic hotel centrally located downtown and near the waterfront promenade and harbor

Overview

Fosshotel Baron's best feature is its central location. It's set on a quiet street a short walk from Rekyjavik's main shopping street in one direction and the waterfront promenade in the other. Guests can easily access the city's best dining, shopping, and cultural attractions, including "Sun Voyager" and the Harpa concert hall. Given its historical background, part of the property remains in the past, with some rooms and bathrooms requiring an update, while others are modern with a rich and moody color scheme. Travelers can enjoy a generous breakfast buffet, unwind with drinks in the bar, and make use of the lone elevator and 24-hour front desk.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • This (partially) historic hotel is centrally located between Reykjavík's main shopping street, Laugavegur, and the waterfront promenade.
  • Choose from tastefully stylized rooms and suites, with some rooms featuring late 1800s-style modest decor or partial views of the Atlantic.
  • A generous breakfast buffet is available, including freshly baked bread, and there's a bar for drinks and snacks.
  • Within a 10-minute walk, guests can access a variety of shops, bars, restaurants, and attractions, like the "Sun Voyager."
  • The shuttle bus for Keflavík Airport conveniently stops right outside Fosshotel Baron.
Cons
  • Some rooms feel tight with low/slanted ceilings and small bathrooms.
  • Not all rooms are equal in aesthetics, and some could use a refresh. However, the staff is accommodating and can help arrange a room change.
  • On-site parking is expensive, but there are more affordable options nearby, such as a garage down the block.

Authenticity

Fosshotel Baron has historical roots: part of the property is housed in Reykjavík's first concrete building, constructed in 1898. Originally intended as a dairy farm built by a French baron, the hotel's name and the street it resides, Barónsstígur (Baron's Path), are a nice little nod to its history. While some rooms feature late 1800s-style decor and reflect the property's history in its understated artwork and furnishings, others offer a more modern feel.

Location

Fosshotel Baron enjoys a prime location in Reykjavík, an easy 3-minute walk to the hip Laugavegur street, renowned for its restaurants, bars, and boutiques, and a 7-minute walk to access the Sculpture & Shore waterfront promenade, leading you to the iconic "Sun Voyager" sculpture. Add another 5 minutes to your exploration, and you'll hit other popular attractions: Hallgrimskirkja, a church and one of the country's tallest buildings, and Harpa, the beautiful concert hall worth checking inside and out. The hotel sits on a quiet street, offering a peaceful reprieve from the bars a few blocks down.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 120 rooms and suites at Fosshotel Baron vary greatly in style. Some appear outdated, with austere white walls, wall-to-wall carpet, and simple or antique furniture sets. In contrast, others are modern, with hardwood floors, contemporary dark furniture, and black accent walls. While some rooms are small and may feel cramped, they include the essentials, though they won't offer a small fridge like other larger units. A handful of rooms also have a Juliet balcony, though the views aren't great (street view, obstructed view of the Atlantic, or adjacent buildings). The largest of the rooms, the Family Suite, can accommodate up to six guests.

Amenities

Guests can relax with drinks and light snacks at the bar, while the breakfast buffet is a highlight, offering a generous spread each morning (note that breakfast is included in one of two room rates). The front desk is available 24 hours a day, daily housekeeping is upon request, and as there's an elevator, the property is accessible for those with limited mobility.

The lighting in the room and location of the outlets could be improved. Our room had two small beds vs. a queen bed.

The first room we were put in was very small, had a very low/slanted ceiling and a shower so tiny we wouldn’t have fit. After nicely asking to be moved, the next room was better; felt more like a hotel room rather than a guest room in an attic. The onsite parking was outrageously expensive (would have been about $55/per day. Thankfully we were able to park in a garage down the block for a more affordable rate. Still not our favorite stay of our trip. Read more

This hotel was perfectly adequate with easy parking and good location for getting around. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only issue was the quality of tap water; the hot water had a sulfur smell. It was not terribly bad and the water was safe to drink, but we never encountered this at any other place during our trip. Read more
