Quinta de S. Bernardo Winery & Farmhouse, Peso da Régua
Historic family home turned chic modern hotel with an infinity pool, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a spa
Overview
History is alive and cozy in Quinta de S. Bernardo Winery & Farmhouse, a family-run boutique hotel whose walls hold hundreds of years of stories just about 1.5 hours outside of Porto. The farmhouse building dates back to 1756, while the family-run winery began in 1912—so this is an ideal hotel for anyone who wants to experience the culture and history of the Douro Valley, the world's oldest demarcated wine region. The hotel is perched just above the Douro River, and you can enjoy views of the river and mountains from almost anywhere on the property.
There are just under 10 rooms, which lends an intimate feeling to the hotel, where guests are treated like family. The style is modern and chic, combining earthy tones, minimalist furniture, and farm motifs with original details like slanted ceilings. Nearly all have views of the river, and a few have partial views of the vineyards. Standard and Deluxe Doubles feel like a tight squeeze, so consider booking a Superior or Villa to spread out more. Some options have clawfoot bathtubs, and the Villa has a terrace and private pool overlooking the river.
While wine-making is a focus here, the hotel is also centered around peace and relaxation and offers facilities to help you immerse yourself in the tranquil landscape. Take a dip in the infinity pool above the Douro River or enjoy a food and wine tasting in the glass greenhouse with views all around. The on-site restaurant offers farm-to-table fare, while the spa has an indoor pool, massage treatments, and a gym. Challenge others to friendly board games or a round of pool in the cozy family room in this hotel that feels like you're staying with your warm, stylish family in the Portuguese countryside.

This was our most favourite place of our whole trip and we adjusted our itinerary to meet their 2-night requirement because nothing else compared in the Douro. The facilities, the views, the wine, the food, the amenities and the service were unparalleled. It’s a most special place that we’d want to return to every year. Truly a hidden gem.
